  • Our Story

I'm Coach Chris Martin.  Everything I read online was that getting hit by a pitch is "just part of baseball".  When I took that message back to my 8-year old team, I had a bunch of little kids looking back at me like I was crazy.  I have coached baseball for a few years.

    Why KIARMOR?

Baseball is all about progression.  Kids go from the tee to a coach pitching to them.  When kids start pitching to them, ironically, the same time we switched to hard balls, everything changes.  I had a number of kids that were hitting the ball well in coach pitch that just completely fell off a cliff.  The reason…fear and hesitation.  7 and 8 year old pitchers are not accurate.  There are more than a few that can throw 45 mph.  And there is always one that downright has kids shaking in their cleats.

    Why not baseball?

Taking a pitch in the back hurts, but the fear is magnified, particularly after seeing a teammate get hit and drop to the ground crying (which even the toughest kids do).  Almost every other sport has pads.  A hard baseball is not that much softer than a lacrosse ball or hockey puck, and no one is asking those kids to just take one on the back because it’s just part of the game

I created this product out of desperation.  I watched as my son was so scared of the ball that the fear was completely holding him back and making the sport unenjoybal and stressful.  He was hitting it well against coaches.   When we switched to kid pitch, he became an entirely different player.  He would take multiples steps back out of the box as if he expected every single pitch to hit him.  It was difficult to watch because he was not having fun.  He actually refused to face the somewhat wild, fast-throwing pitcher in a game.

I had to think of something.  That’s when KIARMOR was born.  bodyARMOR is a protective shirt provides padding that covers the entire back, allowing youth players to take pitches the proper way.  Even more importantly, they have confidence in stay in the box and give themselves a chance.  It allows them to focus their minds on their swing as opposed to worrying about getting hit and hurt.  It allows them to not fall behind in development.  There are many kids that have given up the sport due to fear of getting hit by a pitch.  My son, Kai, gained tremendous confidence, partly because of the shirt.  The game he hit 2-homeruns.  He continued to get better.  The progress was noticeable as I started getting questions and requests for the padded shirt.

Safety issue by opening up.  There is a proper way to take a pitch, by turning back to the catcher and taking it in the back.  Opening up to expose one’s chest, collar bone, private area, stomach, etc. actually is more dangerous, especially when a facemask is not required.  The vast majority of batters are completely fine, most of them won’t even get a bruise.  But the issue is one of lost confidence.

The pads are not noticeable.  No other kids knew he was wearing pads until he took off his jersey one day.
